Camp Saqqaq, Disko Bay

Limited to just ten guests at a time, Camp Saqqaq is a tented camp perched on the edge of Greenland’s breathtaking Disko Bay. Here, you’ll look out at colourful fishing houses and calm blue waters all framed by glittering icebergs. With a season of four months, the camp is set up every May and disappears without a trace every September. With just six tents, time is of the essence.

LOCATION

Situated on Greenland’s enchanting west coast – just 10km north of the Ilulissat ice fjord – Camp Saqqaq is only accessible by RIB boat (or a 25-minute helicopter ride). Touching down in Ilulissat, you’ll head to the tranquil fishing village of Saqqaq in Disko Bay, where colourful houses overlook gleaming icebergs. There, 700m from the village, you’ll find your home for the next few nights.

YOUR ROOM

Overlooking ice and sea, each of the camp’s luxurious tents features full-size beds with soft arctic linen, cozy reading chairs, and ensuite bathrooms fitted with hot water showers. Lit by candles and decorated with furs, you’ll relax in modern comfort (and warmth) while taking in the sweeping views of Disko Bay. Right by the water’s edge, you won’t have to look very far.

WHY WE LIKE IT

One of our favourite elements of Camp Saqqaq is the emphasis placed on embracing the wilderness and getting back to basics. Here, you can forage for wild berries and mushrooms, catch fish just off camp in the ice fjords, and enjoy a traditional Inuit-style BBQ over flat rocks warmed by the fire. Between dining (and foraging), you’ll explore the surrounding natural landscapes; taking a (very) refreshing dip in the Arctic Ocean and paddleboarding between towering icebergs.

SUSTAINABILITY

At Camp Saqqaq, the camp’s water is sourced from the nearby river and bathrooms feature eco-friendly toilets and locally crafted bath products. All non-organic waste is carefully transported to the village for proper disposal and wastewater is directed towards a designated dry well to minimise any environmental impact.
